Who is Carike?

Carike van Beek is a self-taught New Zealand acrylic artist creating original paintings that blend fantasy, abstraction, and surrealism. Guided by intuition and imagination, her work explores dreamlike worlds through expressive colour, rich texture, and layered compositions. Each painting invites viewers to interpret their own story and experience a sense of wonder, curiosity, and emotional connection.

Carike's process is largely instinctive. She rarely begins with a fixed image in mind, instead building each piece through layers of acrylic, allowing shapes, colour, and texture to emerge as the painting develops. That approach gives her work a sense of movement and depth, with details that reward a closer look and shift depending on light, angle, and mood.

Her influences draw from fantasy illustration, abstract expression, and surreal dreamscapes, but the finished works remain distinctly her own. Bold contrasts sit alongside softer, atmospheric passages, and familiar forms often dissolve into something stranger and more open-ended. The result is art that feels both immersive and personal, as though each canvas holds a private world made visible.

Based in New Zealand, Carike works primarily in acrylic on canvas, favouring techniques that emphasise texture and luminosity. Whether creating original pieces or responding to commission ideas, she aims to make work that feels alive rather than decorative: paintings that spark conversation, stir memory, and leave room for the viewer's imagination to complete the story.
